I think most of us, whether we realize it or not, have heard that small voice of God that Elijah heard. What did it sound like? Maybe the better question is: what did it feel like? I think the most often time it happens is right after Confession. When you leave the confessional, is there a sense of… something different? It may be something felt in the back of your mind, or the core of your heart, or the pit of your stomach. Something has changed. You have heard the voice of God!
As we heard with Elijah, it was not in the great storm, or big phenomena, but in the still, quiet breeze where God spoke to Elijah with the simple question that immediately follows our reading: “why are you here?” I think it is a humorous reminder from God to Elijah that God is in control. But it was given to Elijah in such a way that he understood the work of God was still ahead of him, not just in the past. He was strengthened by this still quiet breeze.
