We know that we are born into the world with original sin, and therefore in slavery to sin and the devil, so creation itself was subjected to a slavery that according to Paul is scheduled to be set free because of the children of God. Paul puts it this way: “creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.” That is from our reading today.
Paul then makes a startling statement. All creation is groaning because of this bondage caused by sin. Can we hear that groaning, or see it? I believe we can. We see it in the storms. We hear it in the thunder. We see it in the sicknesses that people endure from the common cold to cancer.
There are those who are convinced that we are seeing some of that groaning in climate change issues. Now I’m not going to get into the argument on that, because I’m not a scientist.
