We remember this reading from Zechariah as being part of Palm Sunday. “Your King is coming to you… Riding on a donkey.” Why a donkey? You would think the King of Kings and Lord of Lords would be riding on a big white horse. But the way I understand it, the horse for Jewish mindsets was not as important of a status symbol as a donkey. For those of you who have seen Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, do you remember the high priest riding up Mount Calvary? He was riding a donkey.
Now, I know Zechariah says that the King is coming in humility by riding on a donkey. But good and true rulers and leaders would be humble. And there are a lot of people who seem to act in humility, but their humble acts are really pride. It is a much more serious sin than we realize. A sense of false humility cannot stand before God. And that is one of the reasons why Jesus in the gospel tells us we must live with his meek and humble heart. This meek and humble heart is to live in a… childlike wonder at the grace of God.
