The Words of Jesus from the Cross
Mathew & Mark:
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Cried out in a loud voice.
Luke:
I assure you: this day you will be with me in paradise.
Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
John:
Woman, behold, your son – Behold your mother.
I thirst.
It is finished.
I mentioned last week that I think it’s important for us to think about the words that Jesus uses. I want to take a special look at the words of Jesus from the cross. We only have two of the seven phrases in our gospel reading this weekend. Matthew and Mark use the same two phrases, or utterances, of Jesus. One of those isn’t even a word, or a phrase. It just says: Jesus “Cried out in a loud voice.”
